The Philosophical Adventure Of A Mystery Teacher - 1460 Words

Sophie Amundsen realized her ordinary life will never be the same when she begins to receive philosophical lesson from a mystery teacher. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the different life lessons given to Sophie and how the life around us today is completely owed to the early philosophers. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and many other philosophers, although persecuted for their ideas at the time, had ideas that would revolutionize society and they way they learned about the universe. In addition, the philosopher used short stories or anecdotes in order to help Sophie better understand the complex philosophical questions. When Sophie receives the first note, it simply asked, â€Å"Who are you?† Many may have thrown the note away, but S ophie decided to keep it. She pondered the question for a while, and put some real thought into it. She thought about her appearance; her eyes, her hair, and her frequent dissatisfaction with the way she looked. Other than that, she found it hard the answer the question (pg. 5). I think many struggle with this in general. Is it possible that too much time is spent carrying out the daily duties, such as work, school, and family that we may not spend enough time on self reflection? Oedipus the King Sophocles is widely recognized as one of the greatest drama and play writes of all time. Sophocles’ writing takes place in the classical period. His unique style of writing involves symbolism, archetypal characters and tragedies. This type of style is shown in the â€Å"Oedipus the King† which can consists of either a great man or woman who has fallen. Sophocles paints a clear picture of exercising free will and it’s benefits, and the disastrous effects it can have on ones’ life. Oedipus was determined to end the plague in the city of Thebes by finding the murderer of King Laius. Oedipus also struggled with not knowing the identity of his parents. Tiresias the prophet of Thebes said, â€Å"Oedipus you killed the man whose killer you now hunt†. In this statement, Tiresias revealed that he had knowledge of the moral crime that was responsible for bringing Oedipus into existence. Oedipus, upset about Tiresias’ revelation, turns to the person who he feels he can trust the most, which was his wife Jokasta. He wanted Jokasta to give him answers to his questions. Jokasta insisted that Oedipus keep living without knowing the truth. Jokasta begged, â€Å"For god’s sake, if you care about your life give up your search. Let my pain be enough!† Later she says, â€Å"You poor child! Never find out who are you† (Sophocles 694). Jokasta’s use of the phrase â€Å"poor child† toward Oedipus denotes her compassion, and the love she has for him. She also knew that he would not want to know that the man he killed, Laius, was his father. Jokasta tried to shield him from the truth; just as a parent will try to protect their child at all times. Bosses often treat teens worse than regular employees, for example not giving them holiday pay or proper training. Sometimes the work they do is unsuitable or even dangerous. Some of these dangerous works include working with high tech machinery meant for adults with experience and also dealing with hazardous chemicals. However, there are many more dangerous works or activities where teens are forced to work in. It is interesting that a Scottish study found very few employers had bothered to get the permits needed for their student workers. Also since high school students tend to be younger, it is easier for them to be pushed around. High school students are often paid under the minimum wage and also are pressured to work for longer hours, especially during Christmas and other times. The reason why they do this is because the students are afraid that they would get fired easily. Not only do students get harmed or threatened during work, there have been many cases of death and injuries to adolescence in part time jobs. An article in the American federation of the teacher’s publication states that there were seventy deaths of teens in the work place and over a hundred thousand still recovering in hospitals over the past year. This is the result of the many dangerous jobs that some of the bosses give to these students. As a result, part time jobs can harm high school students both mentally and physically. Students should not be permitted into such dangerous atmospheres like part time jobs.

Ray Tomlinson worked as a computer engineer for Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN), the company hired by the United States Defense Department to build the first Internet in 1968. Ray Tomlinson was experimenting with a popular program he wrote called SNDMSG that the ARPANET programmers and researchers were using on the network computers (Digital PDP-10s) to leave messages for each other. SNDMSG was a local electronic message program. You could only leave messages on the computer that you were using for other persons using that computer to read. Tomlinson used a file transfer protocol that he was working on called CYPNET to adapt the SNDMSG program so it could send electronic messages to any computer on the ARPANET network. Biology and Psychology University has always appealed to me because of the wealth of experiences it has to offer as a student. Although I enjoy English Literature and Chemistry: two of my 'A level´ subjects, I am especially keen to study Biology and Psychology. For me, the main appeal of the course lies in the variety of topics that will be covered. The aspects of Biology I find particularly interesting are neuroscience and how the immune system functions and responds. In Psychology, I am very interested in what makes people unique and how different factors shape our personality. I have had two work placements (East Barnet Library in June 1998 and WH Smith in April 2000), both of which proved successful and productive. These experiences especially allowed me to use my interpersonal skills to the full. In my references, both employers remarked on my willingness to learn, my enthusiasm and initiative as well as my ability to work independently and as part of a team. One of the most interesting posts I have held in school is Deputy Managing Director of the 'Young Enterprise´ company, "Opus 21", I found the experience both rewarding and challenging. We encountered some problems at first, but the team worked together to solve them and I felt a real sense of pride to see the company succeed. My skills were further put to use when I helped represent my school in the 'Team Technology´ competition at the 'Logica´ headquarters in London. This involved solving problems in highly realistic business situations, within a limited time. My group was Runner-up, winning one week of work experience with 'Logica´ and prize money for our school. Throughout my schooling I have been closely involved in charity work. Being sponsored to speak French for a day proved to be one of my most innovative (and amusing!) methods of raising money. I have a variety of hobbies outside school. When time allows, I find playing the keyboard and creative writing, such as poetry, a change from my studies. I enjoy using computers as a hobby and to broaden the skills I have gained from my RSA word processing course. My other pursuits include more physical activities such as attending the gym regularly, dancing and cycling.

The media displays the â€Å"ideal† woman, and how can any real woman possibly commit to meeting such standards? It is not physical conflict with oneself, but a mental and emotional battle as well. The average American will see 3,000 ads a day and up to three years of commercials, but generally does not feel uninfluenced. With commercials that promote not only products, but images, values, and normalcy, advertising tells who we are and who we should be (Kirk and Okazawa-Rey 123). It is ludicrous for young women in North America to feel inadequate based on images from popular magazines or television commercials. Though the struggle is difficult, it is one of great importance that offers strategies to confront and overcome these challenges. The most significant struggle young women in North America face today is how they are viewed by their society. The media sets impractical ambitions that few women can aspire to; however, beauty ideals are not the only challenge young women face. Sexual orientation and inferiority to men are all limiting factors in young women’s lives. Young women use cultural expectations from advertisements as a model for their lifestyles and this can result in damaging, and sometimes fatal consequences. In a society where many young Americans have unlimited access to the media, how, in their time of development, can young women be expected to ignore magazines that target girls and young women and convince them that in order to be successful in life, they must fit the particular mold society has formed for them? Women of color or disability, women who are heavier or tanner, women who have blemishes and scars are all viewed in our society as less than attractive people. Why? Because the media defines the accepted and always changing representation of beautiful and perfect, women feel as though they must sacrifice their identity to gain acceptance and approval in their culture. Because we are living in a culture that still breeds sexism, racism, and homophobia, the media can easily discourage a great number of young women. Ashmore, Englis, and Solomon tell us that 30% of teens commit suicide on the sole basis of fear of not being accepted by society. If the media is contributing to the loss of young women in North America, then how can we expect society to maintain its broad range of diversity among young individuals? Most young women look to society through media, whether it is for a reaction, to gain approval, or at times, simply because it is so hammered into our minds that acceptance from our society is necessary. Starting at a very young age, television program commercials display ads for Barbie Dolls, and girls in North America immediately bombarded with images showing what women should look like. Recent research has shown that the exposure to the ideal female as presented in advertising directly contributes to body image disturbance among young women (Posavac, Posavac, and Weigel 324). The media, with its emphasis on beauty and thinness as an ideal standard of female attractiveness, has been singled out as the most potent messenger of societal pressures, according to Ashmore, Basil, and Solomon. Young women engage in social comparison unknowingly when viewing models in magazines or watching them on television. After comparing themselves to these media images of ideal female attractiveness, an apparent difference between their actual beauty and the media’s standard of attractiveness is likely to result, leaving our young women feeling inadequate. According to Kirk and Okazawa-Rey, by college age, one in eight women in the United States is bulimic imaging herself to be fatter than she actually is (122). Magazine articles and feature photos that are airbrushed or enhances to show flawless models and actresses set a standard for women to learn to inspect their bodies critically as to fit the mold of what beauty has come to mean in North America. With the growing awareness of sexual orientation, another conflict is introduced to young women in North America. Young women who watch the news on television or read the newspaper learn about hate crimes that still exist in our culture. A fear is placed in these young women who are confused or undecided about their sexual orientation, placing a heavy burden on them. According to Kirk and Okazawa-Rey, thirteen years old is the â€Å"median age when gay and lesbian youth become aware of their feelings of difference† (173). At such a young age, girls are introduced to an uncommonly accepted dilemma, one which is confusing and life-altering. Because of growing debate on homosexuality shown in the media, many young women are unsure of how they will cope as a lesbian or bi-sexual in a world with such opposition to homosexuality. Young American have access to movies such as Lee’s film, Brokeback Mountain which first aired in 2005 or Pierce’s film, Boys Don’t Cry which first aired in 1999. Both are love stories that capture the fear of homosexuals yearning for a relationship that is socially unacceptable and the hate crimes that lead to their ultimate deaths. Though horrific, these films show courageous young men and women whose lives have been stolen from them, solely because of their sexual orientation. These films, though graphic and horrifying, show an inevitable truth that, unless addressed and fought, will continue through generations to come. Young women’s feeling of inferiority when compared to males in North America is an intimidating struggle. Kirk and Okazawa-Rey found that â€Å"gender creates the social difference that defines â€Å"women† and â€Å"man†. In social interactions throughout their lives, individuals learn what is expected, see what’s expected, act and react in expected ways† (25). These expectations are socially influenced and lead young women constantly berating themselves because a male influence, whether it is their partner, their father, or other male controllers in society, offers no equal opportunity and allows no chance or fairness. The media displays men as enforcers. Men are viewed as strong and able, never petite or weak, like the trophy wife displayed next to them. Women are sometimes viewed as unequal in a relationship, forcing them to obey their partner’s requests of them. Young women especially are reduced to sex objects as viewed as in pornograph y. â€Å"There are two jobs women receive a higher pay than men: prostitution and modeling† Kirk and Okazawa-Rey 104). If the media is so apt to put down young women’s ambition and society is so quick to refuse to respect them, how are they supposed to succeed in their societies? No solution will fit to aid the wants and needs of all members in a society. The media is our source of education. It updates and informs Americans. How would we know America’s political standing in Iraq or be informed of an upcoming film in theaters? The media is not just a source of information, it is our main source. The media is a source of entertainment, too. Articles we read in these magazines may be located on the corresponding page of a supermodel, but are humorous and enjoyable. Young Americans watch television shows for entertainment. If a disabled woman is placed on the cover of a magazine, would young women buy the magazines, hoping to aspire to be similar to her? Diversity is hard to come across in advertisement. Are young Americans apt to choose to purchase a magazine with a heavy woman or thin woman on its cover? If a billboard is promoting a health product, the man or woman in the ad must look healthy to convince consumers that the product is worth their money . Market researchers are watching their audience, and beauty magazines such as Cosmopolitan or Vogue attract young readers rather than older men and women who are less apt to buy high fashion magazines. The media is everywhere. It is not a simple task to change it based solely on the insecurities of young women in North America, but perhaps to encourage self-esteem in out young women, we could add successful old and young women who do not fit society’s beauty ideals. With the broad range of entertainment today we see J.K. Rowling, author of Harry Potter series, who fought for the right to read for pleasure and is one of the most successful women in North America. Ali Hewson, though married to international superstar, Bono, is an activist for human rights and global sustainability. Why do we not look to these women as role models? Though young women are, in fact, being influenced by society’s interpretation of beauty, everyday beautiful, inspi ring women are introduced to the media, reassuring these young women that individuality can lead to success. Generic Conventions of Documentary The Purpose of this Essay is to explore the Generic Conventions of Documentary and Documentary photography, comparing the two and to explore how street photography has evolved since its introduction in the late 19th century. This essays primary purpose is to Examine How Street Photography came about and how it has changed since it was revolutionised in the early 20th Century, then it will explore and compare two photographers who forever changed the way that street photography is perceived, The secondary purpose of this essay will be to debate the question, unlike documentary photography, which sets out to record historical events and everyday life, does street photography need a subject in the image in particular with Eugene Atget, who went around photographing various street corners and shops in Paris without a person in the photo. First of all, one must ask the question, exactly what is a photograph? In The Photograph, Graham Clarke Describes the word Photograph as Light Writing, he goes on to say that it also speaks as an underlying concern to control light and time and that the photograph not only signals a different relationship to and over nature, it speaks very much to a sense of power in a way that we seek to construct the world around us Clarke, (1997, P11). So how does one read a photograph? A picture is worth a thousand words, but how does one interpret them? Every time the viewer sees an image he or she has their own personal view of that image so it falls to the photographer or artist to put their own messages/meanings behind their images and leave the interpretation open to the viewer, Photographic Art Generally falls into four main types of photographic genres, Landscape, Portraiture, Fine Art, and Documentary, each picture in each genre gives off a different emotional response In Particular Eugene Atget and Cartier Bressons Photographic styles would fall into the Landscape Documentary categories. So lets look at what these two categories are, in photography; The Key Concepts, David Bate describes documentary photography as Telling a story with pictures, Documentary photography gave new life and social function, Documentary aimed to show in an informal way the everyday lives of ordinary people, to other ordinary people -ÂÂ   Bate, (2009, P45). This emerged as popular practise following the First World War, and began to develop through the 20th century, after the horrors of the First World War, more and more photographers went out and photographed everyday events happening to normal everyday people out in the streets, this social documentary work went on to dominate the early 20th century with people undertaking projects based on the after effects on war and how it changed the lives of everyday peoples lives forever, One such example would be the 1972 accidental napalm attack in the Vietnamese war, one of the most reproduced images of that time, Robert Haeberles People abo ut to be shot which Clarke describes as An anonymous war machine raining down napalm accidentally on innocent children but such a narrative cannot deflect us from the presence of intense agony Clarke (1997, P160) By looking at this photo the reader is invited to feel all the emotions these children went through, screams, cries and sorrow, but the photographer is trying to invite the reader to understand that although we can see visually how horrible the events were, that theres nothing more horrible than what the innocent subjects were going through, The Photographer Robert Haeberles statement himself guys were about to shoot these people I yelled hold it and shot my pictures, M16s opened up and from the corner of my eye I saw bodies falling but I did not turn to look Rovert Haeberle Clarke, (1997, P160). Next theres Landscape Photography, there are many different narratives that landscape photography could fall in to, but the main thing to think about with street photography in landscapes is what is the photographer attempting to show the reader in a landscape picture? Is it just the environment, the place, or is it perhaps a landscape being dominated by the presence of humans in the photograph, In David Bates Photography, the key concepts, Bate goes on to say what this means is that whatever is seen is always coded via the picture. Therefore HOW the material is seen in the picture, the way it is pictured, is as critical as what is shown Bate, (2009, P90) the photographer is encouraging the reader to think of the bigger picture of what the landscape photograph represents, Roger Fenton, one of the early Pioneers in photography was one of the first to make the reader question and think about what they were viewing, his approach was to places that had been established as tourist areas, places that people already had a view on, places of great beauty and social harmony In his approach to landscape Fenton both reflects a highly specific cultural vocabulary based on literature and painting, this sense of the photographer as privileged tourist is underscored by the way Fenton often photographed tourist areas which had already been depicted in painting and literature his images reflect the leisurely assumptions of a class of people who looked upon landscape scenery in aesthetic and philosophical terms (Clarke, 1997, P56). The photograph often gives off a hint of a unified Britain, but Fenton, a war photographer, is trying the challenge the readers views and make you see the bigger picture, look beyond the picture and think of problems that may have been going on around that area at the time. This brings the essay on to Part two, firstly unlike Documentary Photography, does Street Photography need a person in the photo? As mentioned earlier in the essay this is left very open to the viewer to make their mind up, Eugene Atget didnt think it did, Eugene Atget was one of the main pioneers in 20th century street photography, and most of his work was done on the streets of Paris, his photos that do have people are very surreal, questioning our perception of what is dream and what is reality, looking at one of Atgets pieces of work, A Corner, rue de seine, As quoted by Clive Scott in Street Photography, From Atget to Cartier Bresson Perhaps the most celebrated photograph of this street is the one that Atget took on an early May morning in 1924, a photo of a wedge shaped building at the corner of the rue de seine, The oblique view shown here emphasizes the rapid foreshadowing created by the wide angle lens, the distortion produced by the lens also gives the building a marked pre cariousness, is this tilting to the right a consequence of intoxication or old age? The building has open eyes, only on the third and fourth floors at the near end, everywhere else in the building is sealed in somnolence or death -(Scott, 2007, P178/P180) The Photograph is a very surreal image which is challenging the reader to try decode its many layers, The viewer sees it as an image with a lot of gothic potential, the mist adds to this effect, and the building is shown to be in disrepair, so although the image is shown without subjects, theres a much deeper hidden meaning, a very dark and dreary meaning that could perhaps signal a change in cultures, the building is old, very pre-World War One, perhaps this image also trying to indicate a struggle to adapt to the new world after war, also although most of the text in image is left blurred or too small to read, we can clearly read the words petit bouif which is actually a shoe repair shop, which Atget is also well known for photog raphing,ÂÂ   we also see the pictures of what we assume are lost family pets, again we can relate this back to the time, 6 years after the world war ended what exactly has Paris become. Moving on to Cartier Bresson,ÂÂ   much of his work is not actually considered documentary photographer, he was a revolutionary photographer who couldnt really be placed into any single genre, he did almost every type of photography you could do, but although he wasnt a documentary photographer, one of his most well-known images that Im going to look at is, the photo was taken outside the train station saint lazar, although colour camera did not exist at this time Bresson noticed the rain in the foreground, and the beautiful mist like feature blocking the houses in the background, and by chance he saw a man jumping over the picture which he then snapped on his black and white camera, we can see from the picture that the man was caught in mid motion, the blur that has appeared from the mans speed but also the contrast makes the picture stand out more, so we have to ask the question, had the man not been there jumping over the ladder when Bresson snapped him, would this have becom e arguably Bressons most well-known photograph? Although there is still a lot going on in the picture, such as the ladder and rubble in front of it, the railowsky sign clearly visible in the midground, and even the other person visible near the background, at least in this case although Bresson may not have been a documentary photographer, this picture is a documentary photograph Reference List: Scott, Clive.
